Conrail Heritage Unit

ALTOONA, PA. - The first locomotive to be painted in Norfolk Southern’s 30th anniversary heritage paint schemes rolled out of the company’s Juniata Locomotive Shop here yesterday. Locomotive NS 8098, a GE ES44AC, bears the “Conrail Blue” scheme. It is a 4,400-horsepower, EPA Tier-3 compliant Evolution Series locomotive equipped with distributed power capability. It will be run to Conway, Pa., and enter active transportation service.

I am terribly sorry to hear that Bill has died.  I had the impression that his recent health problems had stabilized and that I’d get to see him some day soon, but it appears that things took a turn for the worse.

Bill was one of the most-experienced and totally-reliable railroaders I ever knew.  Because of his honesty and forthright approach he was respected by everyone who worked with him, under him, and for whom he worked. 

He was the perfect model of a Railroad Superintendent.  The world will miss him.

 Statement from Nate Clark:

A Railroader's Railroader, a gentleman and a giant in our midst.  From my personal perspective, Mr. Flight was the individual who most influenced my railroading career...yet I never even had the pleasure to work for the man.  We met along the Erie Lackawanna's Mahoning Division when I was 13 and he was Division Superintendent in the early Seventies. We remained in touch as recently as the beginning of this year.  I know that those who knew him will share my sense of loss.  May the next ERIE 2900 he takes up the grade out of Youngstown be a fast runner and an easy steamer.    ---Nate

It is with deep regret that I report the passing of William E. (Bill) Flight, at about 8:45 AM on Thursday, March 8. Bill had recently moved to an assisted living facility in Mount Dora, FL and had had some health issues.

Bill was former Erie, EL and Conrail, and retired in 1986 as Division Superintendent of Conrail's Allegheny Division. Bill's wife, Dot, had passed away a few years ago and is survived by his two sons and grandchildren.

Final arrangements are being made, and I understand that services will be next Friday or Saturday at his home town of Moosic PA (near Scranton in northeastern PA). I will be glad to forward the information once I receive it.
